Description:

The Senior Food Scientist, R&D consistently plays a critical role in Bama's financial success by managing projects which contribute to culinary and food processing excellence. This position researches, plans and designs experiments, coordinates research and development projects, evaluates results, and provides recommendations to management. Project assignments are complex, involving a high degree of product and food processing knowledge, and require the ability to work with a broad variety of functional groups within the company.

Critical characteristics and attributes of the individual in this role includes a solid educational and professional experience background in food product research and development.  The individual must be extremely knowledgeable about flour-based products, ingredient functionality, food processing equipment, new product development and core product improvement processes with specific expertise in more than one process, platform or line.  In addition, they must exhibit strong analytical/problem solving skills, and use sound judgment when resolving issues.  The individual must have a demonstrated track record of effective interpersonal relationships and the ability to successfully collaborate on a cross-functional team.

Based in Tulsa, Oklahoma, the Senior Food Scientist, R&D will accomplish their project goals and objectives through effective leadership and working relationships with company leaders, customers, functional change agents, and vendor partners.  The Senior Food Scientist, R&D reports to the Director, R&D.

  • Regularly works with the Business Team to support and improve our AOP and scorecards
  • Uses sensory data in new product development efforts, when appropriate.
  • Provides technical services to Operations to help ensure operational quality. Facilitates training of in-process staff on functionality of ingredients, process parameters, etc.
  • Develops strong working relationships with existing and potential ingredient vendors, in conjunction with Bama's Supply Chain Management group.
  • Creates testing plans with detailed timelines on all assigned projects and shares regular updates with Project Management.
  • Keeps up with industry trends, including new technologies, new ingredients and innovative approaches to food science.

Qualifications:

  • Possess and demonstrate passion for the job, the role, and the company
  • Master's degree in Food Science or equivalent experience required.
  • Minimum 7 10 years of experience in research and development in the foodservice industry; bakery product category across multiple platforms preferred.
  • Experience with conducting production trials and interacting in a plant environment.
  • Experience in developing product specifications and interacting with vendors.
  • Experience in using sensory and consumer testing in product development is a plus.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Lotus Notes.  Ability to quickly learn and master new technologies.
  • Strong analytical abilities.
  • Excellent follow-up skills, demonstrated experience in problem solving and achieving Win/Win solutions.
  • Available to travel as necessary (less than 30%)
  • Demonstrate the ability to solve problems

  • Interact collaboratively with Operations teams, and visit Bama's facilities on a regular basis
